We also stock one shot grease for these
Item number 1
Changing the swivel housing oil on a Series 101 Forward Control Land Rover (or any solid axle Land Rover with swivels) is a straightforward task if you’re familiar with basic maintenance. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Tools & Materials:
-
1/2″ square drive ratchet
-
13mm or 14mm spanner (depends on filler plug)
-
Drain pan
-
Swivel housing oil (EP90, MTF94 or one shot grease)
-
New washers (if needed)
-
Cleaning rag
Steps:
-
Position Vehicle & Safety:
-
Park the vehicle on a level surface.
-
Engage handbrake and chock wheels.
-
-
Locate the Swivel Housings:
-
These are the round “ball” joints at the outer end of each front axle (behind the wheel hubs).
-
-
Remove the Filler Plug:
-
Usually located about halfway up the swivel housing. Use a 1/2″ square ratchet or appropriate spanner.
-
Do this before draining to make sure you can refill it afterward.
-
-
Remove the Drain Plug:
-
Located at the bottom of the swivel housing.
-
Let the old oil drain completely into your pan.
-
-
Inspect the Oil:
-
Look for contamination: metal flakes, water (milky oil), or sludge may indicate seal issues.
-
-
Clean and Refit Drain Plug:
-
Replace the washer if needed.
-
Torque to about 25–30 Nm if you have a torque wrench.
-
-
Refill with Swivel Oil:
-
Pour EP90 or one shot oil into the filler hole until it starts to dribble out.
-
Each housing takes about 0.2 to 0.3 liters.
-
-
Refit Filler Plug:
-
Tighten securely, again about 25–30 Nm if torque specs apply.
